A revamped Winchester Scout hut officially opens tomorrow (Saturday) - nearly a year after vandalism forced it to close.

They used to repeatedly target the building, in Somers Close, Stanmore, knocking tiles off the roof and tearing down fencing, according to Scout leaders.

The hut closed last May but now, thanks to a lottery grant of £86,000, it has been fully refurbished and will be opened by Winchester MP, Mark Oaten.

Keith Gale, chairman of the 8th Winchester Scout Group, said: "For years, we struggling on trying to keep the building together, but eventually decided we needed to do something - so I applied for a grant.

"Now we have this great facility and the biggest difference is the roof, which is completely vandalproof."

The building also has disabled access, a new kitchen, new toilets, freshly painted walls and a new carpet.

Now Mr Gale is hoping the up-to-the-minute facilities will encourage more people to help run the Scout group, which has about 60 members.

"We also want to find some leaders for our Beaver Group, which had to stop running because of a lack of helpers. It's a shame because there are children on a waiting list to join," added Mr Gale.

The official opening takes place at 2pm. There will be an exhibition of Scouting activities in the area and refreshments will be served.
