Pizza Express in Winchester hosted an Italian evening in aid of the charity, Hope and Homes for Children, and raised £800.

The event also led to the formation of a new Winchester support group for the Salisbury-based charity.

Mayor of Winchester, John Steel, and Dr Roland Kargbo, the charity's director, from Freetown, Sierra Leone, were principal guests at the dinner.

Hope and Homes for Children provides funds to support war orphans of Sierra Leone, in West Africa, and war-torn countries across Europe and helps them build a future for themselves with a new family.

Dr Kargbo spoke of his work in the troubled country and the difficult time during the recent rebel war, when 60 orphaned children were rescued, under fire, by dug-out canoe on the open sea.
