PAUL Weller, Bryan Adams and Iggy Pop are among the stars announced for this year's Isle of Wight outdoor music festival.

Other names confirmed for the festival, due to take place on June 14 and 15 at Seaclose Park, Newport, include Starsailor and Counting Crows. More names are expected to be announced next week.

Mod hero and former Jam frontman Paul Weller will be performing on Saturday's bill, as will highly-rated indie band Starsailor. On Sunday music fans will be able to see Bryan Adams and Counting Crows. It is not yet known which day Iggy Pop will perform.

First staged from 1968 to 1970, when it attracted legendary names such as T Rex, Jefferson Airplane and The Doors, the festival was relaunched as a one-day concert, Rock Island, last year. Organisers Wight Leisure were disappointed when last year's event sold poorly and lost £330,000.

It was a far cry from the 1970 festival, which featured performances by Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix and Joan Baez, and was declared a free event after the perimeter fence was torn down by gatecrashers.
