The Nerd - Hamble Players, Hamble Memorial Hall
WITH the Memorial Hall currently in the middle of a refurbishment, The Nerd almost didn't happen.
But, in true theatrical tradition the show must go on and, despite the rennovations, go on it did.
Central to the success of this production is David Wilkins uproarious performance as Rick, the excruciatingly irritating houseguest from Hell.
Although the role is a gift for comic actors, it's to Wilkins's credit he never overplays the part, keeping him surprisingly believable. Physically and vocally he brings the insufferable character to life, showing a true comic talent.
With strong supporting performances from Patric Howe and Andrew Hopkins the cast tackle a difficult comedy with enthusiasm.
There are times when some of the weaker performances overshadow the more polished moments and slow the general pace of the comedy but overall the production is tight and, when all the elements gel, is a delight to watch.
