ENGLISH Touring Opera starts its spring tour of the UK at the Kings Theatre, Southsea, next week with a double bill of Viennese classics.

The country's largest touring opera company will perform Ariadne on Naxos by Richard Strauss on March 11 and Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss on March 12.

The composers are unrelated, but both operas are set in the waltz capital of Vienna. In Ariadne on Naxos, set in the 1920s, a Viennese nobleman commissions a serious opera and music hall act - but he won't have time for both, unless they are performed at the same time. The orchestra is led by Richard Farnes, while Royal Opera House director Colin Graham directs.

Set in Vienna in 1874, Die Fledermaus is the most popular operetta written by Johann Strauss and tells the story of a lavish house party thrown by Prince Orlofsky.

Both performances start at 7.30pm. For tickets and information call 023 9282 8282.
