THE CHAIRMAN of the Isle of Wight Council Councillor Heather Humby has sent a message of good wishes to Cowes-based yachtswoman Ellen MacArthur who with her 13-member crew is this week starting her round-the-world record attempt on board the 110ft giant catamaran Kingfisher 2.

In an e-mail to Ellen after Kingfisher 2 left the French port of Lorient Cllr Humby said: "On behalf of the people of the Isle of Wight I would like to wish you and your crew the very best of fortune in your forthcoming round-the-world record attempt in the Jules Verne event.

"To beat the current record of just over 64 days and eight hours will be no mean achievement but with the expertise of all those on board, favourable weather conditions and luck, I am sure Kingfisher 2 can do it.

"Island residents are proud that you have chosen Cowes as your adopted home."

Ellen is due to start her circumnavigation after a fault involving a metal runner has been overcome. The problem was discovered as the boat was sailed to the start line at Ushant, and remedial work will be carried-out by the team in Plymouth.

Two years ago, after she became the fastest woman to sail single-handed around the world, Ellen was honoured with a reception at Northwood House in Cowes by the then council chairman.
