DETECTIVES on the Isle of Wight have launched an inquiry into the awarding of a beach cleaning contract by the Island's Council.
Detectives raided council offices and removed computer records and other documents.
The contract, worth over £133,000, was awarded by the Island's executive in March last year and was due to operate for six years from May 1, 2002.
Concerns were raised about the awarding of the contract by an Island resident. The council carried out an internal investigation of how the contract was awarded and disciplinary action was carried out against four members of staff over procedures that had been followed.
Mike Fisher, the council's head of paid services, said: "The Isle of Wight Council confirms that the police on January 17 asked for all relevant material relating to the council's beach cleaning contract, which has been provided to them. The council will continue to co-operate with their inquiries."
