CRICKLADE College is continuing the fight to reduce the basic skills need in the area with a 'breakfast club' meeting on 12 February.

A quarter of the population of Andover has some kind of basic skills need and the meeting is a chance for local employers to visit the college and learn about the free training available.

Principal Tom Johnson said: "The economy of Andover is quite complex with low unemployment, low wages and plenty of low skilled jobs to go around, so on the face of it things don't look too bad.

"Scratch underneath the surface and the reality is alarming. Andover has plummeted from the fourth to the 299th most profitable town in just three years.

"How do we improve our business economy and how do we attract new business to the area if we don't have the skills required?"

The meeting will be held in the Cricklade Theatre from 7.30am to 8.30am with breakfast provided.
