IT WAS always going to be a well-contested game between Derek Warwick and Swaythling.

Both teams played steadily - but it was the shooting of the Derek Warwick girls which settled the issue in the end as they won by 42 goals to 37.

The Derek Warwick team has been playing together for 12 years and still have four of their original players - Julie McFadzean, Shirley Frecknall, Tina Jones and Michelle Gibbins.

Sue Reid has been playing for the team for ten years with Gemma Lovell joining nine years ago. The remainder of the team members, Kerry Bascombe, Carol Bascombe, Lisa Hutchings and Lorraine Williams all joined the team during the last two years.

Julie McFadzean is the captain and the heart of the team. She plays goal defence. She is known as Boomer because, for the last five seasons she has threatened to retire but, like a boomerang, keeps coming back.

She works at Southampton University as the assistant manager in the union shop and enjoys spending her spare time with the family and her grandsons.

Her sister, Shirley Frecknall, is a versatile player but, when goalkeeper alongside McFadzean, provides a sibling rivalry and an hilarious double act for the entertainment of the rest of the team.

Frecknall is known as the Joan Collins of the team - because there is never a hair on her head out of place. She is also a sun worshipper and has been know to have the odd holiday or three. She works as a legal secretary at Paris, Smith and Randall

Tina Jones is the smallest player in the team but very fast and agile and makes up for her size by always being heard. 'Jonesy' works full-time alongside McFadzean at the university as a senior office clerk and loves DIY and gardening.

Michelle Gibbins plays mainly goal attack and sometimes centre. She is the graceful blonde bombshell, known as the ballerina of the team. Her two children, Charelle, aged nine, and Brendan (3), keep Michelle very busy in her spare time.

Sue Reid plays on centre court and is one of the quieter players in the team. In her spare time she is a keen skier, known to the team as Eddie the Eagle after breaking her wrist in France. Sue is also a competitive swimmer and a keen traveller and works full time as a civil servant.

Gemma Lovell has been playing with the team since she was aged 12 - a brilliant goal shooter and competent umpire. Her nickname among the team is Sick Note, because she comes up with the best excuses for being late and absent but they would not be without her. Lovell works as a retail manager and loves driving her new red Mercedes

Kerry Bascombe is a defensive player. Due to her brilliant interceptions, she is called 'the flyer'. She has a very accurate and powerful throw. Bascombe works as an auxiliary nurse and enjoys a good social life of which the team sometimes see the after affects on a Saturday afternoon.

Carole Bascombe, Kerry's sister, has recently joined the team as goal keeper and has also shown a keen enthusiasm for umpiring. She is the tallest member of the team and a strong and skilful player. She is a full time mum to a two-year-old girl called Charlie.

Lisa Hutchings is wing defence and the youngest member of the team. She is growing in confidence and is a keen and reliable player and all-round sports person. Lisa lives horse riding and is studying to become a PE teacher. She recently became engaged - so congratulations from all the team.

Lorraine Williams is the newest member of the team and has fitted in well. A very quick and agile player due to being a keen Salsa dancer, Williams works at Southampton University as a lecturer.
