Andover's Justin Bennett proved there is more than one hot strike property in north Hampshire by bagging a hat-trick in last night's 4-2 giant-killing of Basingstoke Town in the Hampshire Senior Cup quarter-final.

While Stoke's QPR trialist Craig McAllister watched on from the bench, 20-year-old Bennett took centre stage as the Jewson Wessex League side booked their place in the last four among the heavyweight company of Aldershot, Havant & Waterlooville and Bashley.

"What a performance!" gasped Lions manager Howard Goddard. "We had a crowd of 400 here and they were saying it was one of the best Andover displays they'd ever seen.

"Basingstoke can have no gripes. Apart from McAllister, they had the same side they field week in, week out in the Ryman Premier Division."

Having fallen behind to a 54th-minute Sean Gorman header, Lions hit back through Bennett and Vince Rusher before Gorman nodded home the equaliser from a Neville Roach cross.

Bennett - who was being closely monitored by Portsmouth and Yeovil - did the rest with a couple of late goals and Andover even had the luxury of missing a penalty through their skipper Glen Damen.

As a former striker himself, ex-Bournemouth man, Goddard knows a good frontman when he sees one and said of 30-goal Bennett: "His game was phenomenal all round.

"He was the best player on the pitch with his workrate, touch and finishing.

"Justin will grab the headlines, but all our players are heroes in my eyes. It's stories like tonight that make football beautiful."

Havant & Waterlooville wasted no time booking their semi-final berth at Christchurch.

The Dr Martens Premier side won 4-0 with all the goals arriving inside 35 minutes.

James Taylor was instrumental in victory, opening the scoring with a far-post header and then laying on goals for Warren Haughton and Neil Davis. Ex-Saint Dean Blake polished off with one of his trademark 25-yard scorchers. "We needed to be thorough and clinical - and we were," summed up co-boss Mick Jenkins.

Paul Wood went off with a hip injury but should be okay for Saturday's big FA Trophy date at Colwyn Bay.
