THE TRAIN arriving at Platform Five in Southampton yesterday will boost the image of the city.

Wessex Trains carriages are now carrying images of the city as part of a major multi-million-pound refurbishment programme on the company's fleet of trains.

The aim of the huge investment programme is to create a more locally recognisable identity for Wessex Trains - and provide a tourism boost to local authorities such as Southampton City Council.

The carriages depict Southampton attractions such as The Bargate, waterfront yachts and a cruise liner.

Southampton mayor Councillor Brian Parnell and Wessex Trains' operational director Tim Shoveller will be joined by other senior council members to launch the new livery at Southampton Central Station.

Councillor Parnell said: "The train will help our campaign to get across the message that Southampton is an excellent place for shoppers, lovers of the arts and entertainment and also a destination for cruise passengers."
