King Alfred's College is getting a Government grant to improve facilities for cyclists.

The £16,000 grant from the Department of Transport will go towards supporting the Winchester college's green transport initiative, which includes cycle parking and changing facilities and improved local routes.

The scheme came to life after a cycle users' group was set up to discover how facilities could be improved for staff and students who cycled into the college.

Cycle sheds, lockers and shower facilities will be built later this year using the grant, £13,000 of which will come from the Government and £3,000 from the college.

Jane Wiggins, director of campus and conference services at King Alfred's said: "There have been two meetings of the cycle group so far.

"We are addressing some points raised by staff and students who cycle to the college, and renewing old bike sheds and providing facilities so cyclists can freshen up when they get here, will improve security and add convenience to their journey."
