Hartley Wintney 2 AFC Wimbledon 0

HARTLEY Wintney enjoyed their biggest day in the club's history as a largest-ever crowd of around 1,400 packed into the Green Lane ground.

A goal in each half - from Ian Dorkin and substitute Alex Haddow - made sure of a home victory against a side eight places above them in the league.

Hartley manager Geoff Holman said: "The club have never experienced anything like this. It was a great atmosphere in the ground."

He added: "There may have been about 1,100 Wimbledon fans, but there still was a roar when we scored.

"I hope they enjoyed what they saw and will come back and watch us again, as we are having a good little run at the moment."

AFC Wimbledon were founded this season by supporters of Nationwide League side Wimbledon in protest over the club's move to Milton Keynes - hence their large following.

The visitors dominated the first 20 minutes, but on 31 minutes the home side took the lead as Tony Reading, under pressure from Scott Holman, was forced into a hurried back-pass.

This left Dorkin and the visiting 'keeper to fight for the ball in a 50-50 challenge, and it was Dorkin who recovered first to slot the ball into the empty net.

However, he was injured in the process and replaced by Alex Haddow.

After the break, 'keeper Warren Hopkins - on his debut - pushed a cracking free-kick on to the bar and, from that, Hartley made it 2-0 as David Sheppard went on a run down the left and crossed for Haddow to score.

Soon after, Hopkins was called into action again to deny a Wimbledon striker a one-on-one chance.

Hartley also had chances to add to their tally with Scott Holman heading wide and Haddow going close.

Afterwards, Holman praised the efforts of his 'keeper and defenders Simon Higgins, Gary Parker, Mike Ruffles and Roger Campion.

Hartley travel to Highbury FA Cup clash stars Farnborough on Wednesday night for a quarter-final game in the Aldershot Senior Cup.

They are next at home on Tuesday, February 4 (7.30pm) when Chessington and Hook are the visitors in a league game.
