BASINGSTOKE College Of Technology has appointed a new principal.

Judith Armstrong (pictured) will take over from the current principal, Steve Cowser, when he retires in August after 15 years in the post.

Ms Armstrong joined BCOT in 1989 as head of information processing from North East London College.

She was promoted in 1992 to head of the faculty for business, which was followed in 1995 by her appointment to her present position as vice-principal corporate services.

With a background in business and management - gained while working at Chloride PLC in London between 1973 and 1981 - Ms Armstrong has an interest in the local economy and has longstanding links with the business community. She was recently appointed as a director of the North Hampshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Ms Armstrong said she was looking forward to continuing the work of Mr Cowser, working closely with the college governors to build on the successes of recent years and ensuring that the college remains a key contributor to the prosperity of the borough.

"In my view, the college plays an important role in the economic, social and cultural aspects of the borough and is integral to the development of the town," she said.

"I hope to further raise awareness of the college, enabling us to meet the education and training needs of the whole community, and look forward to working closely with all our partners in education, government and business."

Ms Armstrong has a passion for learning. In addition to her MA in Education which she gained from the University of Reading, she has also gained GCSE and A-level Spanish at BCOT and is currently studying the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL). Her hobbies include birdwatching, often in obscure parts of the world, and keep fit.

Mr Cowser, an ardent family man, said he is looking forward to spending more time with his wife Lynne and his three children, as well as pursuing his hobbies of golf and fly fishing.
