SUPERMARKET giant Asda is looking for a chaplain to give advice to shoppers at its new store in Brighton Hill, Basingstoke, when it all becomes a bit too much.

The store, which is due to open on June 16, is looking for volunteers from any religion to work for one to two hours per week and to offer a "friendly shoulder" to shoppers and staff who want to talk about anything from the price of tuna to relationship problems.

The role will also allow the chaplain to meet members of his or her congregation in a more informal environment.

A spokeswoman for Asda, Marion Dowling, said: "There will be an interview room available where people can sit and have a chat for an hour or two.

"The idea is to give people that sense of community.

"For some people the only friendly faces they see on a daily basis are down at the supermarket, and because we have moved away from the Open All Hours, Ronnie Barker-type shops, we are trying to put that back in to the community.

"They won't be approaching the public but they will be available to anyone who wants to talk.

"We are looking for volunteers from different religious backgrounds."
