SOUTHAMPTON Saints slid out of the Women's FA Cup at Bristol Rovers yesterday.
Having competently held the ambitious Southern Division leaders to a 1-1 draw after extra-time, Saints suffered the agony of a 3-1 exit on penalties.
Coach Steve Stone said: "We didn't deserve to lose the game - even Bristol's manager Tony Ricketts admitted that afterwards. Our overall play was brilliant but it was the same old problem. We had no one to convert our chances into goals."
After piling on the early pressure, Saints took the lead after 15 minutes when Lyndsey Roe volleyed home from a flicked-on corner.
But their hard work was undone on 33 minutes by a rare goalkeeping error from Toni-Anne Wayne. City broke down the left flank and Wayne - just back from training with the England senior squad in La Manga - inadvertantly diverted Stef Curtis's cross-shot into her own net.
Wayne made amends by tipping Stacey Smith's powerful volley over the crossbar while, at the other end, Roe was unlucky to hit the bar and the post.
In extra-time, Saints' best chance came from Krystal Whyte, who was denied by the keeper's foot in a one-on-one.
Substitute Kate Morris scored Saints' only goal in the penalty shootout with Wayne's two saves overshadowed by three from Rovers' Sue Young.
