Former Saint Dave Piper has dropped down four divisions - by completing his move to ambitious Winchester City.

Piper, 25, has spent the last 18 months at Woking but the Conference club have agreed to let him join the Hampshire League leaders, where he has signed until the end of the season.

The right wing back spent three years with Yeovil after being released by Saints at the age of 19 and is eligible for Winchester's FA Vase clash at Burgess Hill in two weeks' time.

Bournemouth-born Piper lives in Chandler's Ford and helps run a cleaning business in Southampton.

And, after seeing goals from Ian Mancey, Andy Forbes, Danny Smith (2) and Dave Goss give his new club a 5-1 Southampton Senior Cup win at Pirelli this week, he said: "I'm delighted to join Winchester. They're great for the area and it's exciting to join a club that's so ambitious.

"They're a very good side and it's going to be difficult or me to break into the team. People might see this as a step down but I think it could be a case of two steps back and three steps forward in the long term."

Piper was an ever-present for Woking last season and was part of the Yeovil team pipped to promotion to the Third Division by Rushden and Diamonds two seasons ago.

He has also had his fair share of FA Cup success, helping Yeovil to the giant killings of Blackpool, Northampton and Colchester.

And he added: "It'll make a nice change to join a club who are doing so well. I've been out of favour at Woking and was fed up with having to drive all the way up there for training when I work down here."
