A BODY created to help the Kennet victims of domestic violence is keen to contact people who have been victims to assess the difficulties they meet when trying to obtain help.

The Domestic Violence Intervention Service believes anyone trying to access support and information about the services available may have greater difficulties in remote rural areas.

"Anyone who feels they could talk in complete confidence to the group's researcher, Helen Kidman, can also contact the DVIP on 01225 709493," said a spokesman for Wiltshire police.

According to police statistics one woman in four experiences domestic violence at some stage and more than 54,000 women and children stay in refuges in England every year.

Every minute in the UK, police get a call for assistance after domestic violence.

"Wiltshire Constabulary has a policy of taking positive action to break the chain of domestic violence," said the Wiltshire police spokesman.

"There is a specialist unit with staff specially trained to help victims solve their problems, often by accessing the many other agencies who are members of the Kennet Domestic Violence Forum."

Now the forum, funded by the Kennet District Comm-unity Safety Partnership, has published a leaflet highlighting the enormous number of support organisations ready to support victims in the area.

The leaflet gives 76 telephone numbers for organisations such as police, social services, victim support, refuges, Relate, Citizens Advice, Samaritans, solicitors, counselling and support, army welfare, Shelter, NSPCC, Barnardos, together with some national helplines.

Domestic violence is rarely a one-off event say police.
