MARWELL Zoo is offering lovey-dovey couples the chance to adopt a pair of lovebirds.

With St Valentine's Day approaching on February 14, the zoo hopes the birds will lure romantics.

The lovebirds are so-called because of the affection the male displays towards the female. The birds spend much of their time in mutual preening.

However, black-cheeked lovebirds at Marwell have done more than just preen their feathers. In 2002 they produced 13 chicks and the group of these pretty little birds now totals 29.

Black-cheeked lovebirds are from southern Africa and are an endangered species.

The Valentine's special adoption costs £20 and the adopter will receive a certificate with a photo of the lovebirds, a fact sheet about them and a ticket to visit the Park.

Their name will also be displayed on the lovebirds' aviary.

All funds from adoptions support Marwell's conservation work.

Full details and an application form are available on request from Marwell Zoo on 01962 777988.
