POLICE investigating a woman's death have appealed for her relatives to come forward.

Mystery still surrounds the demise of Janet Mary Edwards after a second post-mortem examination proved inconclusive.

Her body was found last Sunday morning in the bedroom of her home in Sissinghurst Close, Weston. An examination conducted by a Home Office pathologist on Tuesday again failed to find a cause of death.

A 46-year-old man who was arrested in connection with the incident has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act to a secure psychiatric unit in Southampton.

The formal identification of the woman who neighbours knew simply as "Mary" was made yesterday by a friend.

But officers' attempts to trace any of her relatives have so far drawn a blank.

Originally from the West Midlands, she was born Janet Mary Cowley in October 1945 at Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire.

She married Frederick Charles Tolly in October 1965. He was 21 at the time and says he was serving in the RAF, at RAF Cranwell although the RAF has no records of Mr Tolly.

Although she had been in Southampton for at least the last three years, it is believed she has also lived in Coventry and Shipton-on-Stour.

At various times throughout her life, she has gone by the names Janet Tolly, Janet Cowley, Janet Williams, Janet Cameron. She may have had several children and that they would now be in their 20s or early 30s. Their names are not known.

Further tests have been carried out and police will continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.

Anyone who believes they knew Janet Edwards or has any information about her family is urged to contact the Operation Laneside team at Hulse Road divisional support headquarters on 0845 045 4545.
