PAUL Gascoigne could be lining up alongside Matt Le Tissier for Jewson Wessex League leaders Eastleigh before the end of the season.

It may sound unbelievable, but Eastleigh boss Paul Doswell has confirmed the audacious Ten Acres club are in talks with the ex-England idol - with Le Tissier acting as the go-between.

Saints legend Le Tissier played his fifth game in an Eastleigh shirt against Fareham Town on Saturday and Doswell confirmed: "Tiss mentioned to me then about the possibility of giving Gazza a game down here if he fancied one.

"It's a bit of a fanciful idea at the moment, but it is possible. If we can pull it off, it would be unbelievable.

"It might not happen, who knows? But people didn't think Le Tiss would sign for us - and he did!"

Gascogine, who played 57 times for England, has been struggling to get fixed up with a club since parting company with Burnley during the summer.

The 35-year-old has been linked with moves to the United States, Malta, Wales and a string of Football League clubs and this week flew to China where he is having trials with five Beijing clubs in an attempt to resurrect his career.

There have been reports in the national press linking the charismatic and controversial Geordie with a £500,000-a-year deal with leading Chinese club Liaoning, but Eastleigh are on standby should his Far East adventure fall flat.

Le Tissier himself is flying out to Singapore any time now to caddy for Southampton golfer Richard Bland and Doswell confirmed: "Tiss has already put a call in to Gazza asking him if he fancies coming down. He genuinely thinks he might be able to pull this off.

"Gazza played in Tiss' testimonial and they know each other from their England days and get on well.

"When Tiss gets back from Singapore, he's going to see what he can organise. Gazza likes his golf so it could work out well if he comes down, stays with Matt at Ocean Village, plays a few rounds of golf and has a game for us."

Gascogine has been working overtime in his local gym in Newcastle to get himself back in shape.

The Gateshead-born star's dazzling midfield skills lit up top-flight football with Newcastle, Tottenham, Lazio, Glasgow Rangers, Middlesbrough and Everton and he is widely recognised as one of England's most gifted ever players.

But should little Eastleigh pull off another of the biggest ever coups in non-league football, Saints fan Doswell would take it all in his stride.

No one - not even Gazza, he reckons, could match the excitement of having Le Tissier in the Stoneham Lane camp.

He said: "Of course we'd jump at the chance of getting Paul Gascoigne here but, in my eyes, Le Tiss is God and if we had Gazza in the dressing room, it wouldn't quite match up to the thrill of having Matt there.

"In my eyes, getting Matthew Le Tissier playing for a Southampton club couldn't be beaten. It's the biggest signing ever."
