TEACHERS and pupils at Hook-with-Warsash school are the toast of the county after topping the Hampshire school league table - and coming second in the UK.

The Church of England school earned top spot in the primary school division after all 61 pupils aged ten and eleven achieved the target level four in English, maths and science.

The effort was made all the more extraordinary as only 177 other schools managed the same feat nationwide.

Head teacher Christopher Hines said: "We are of course extremely pleased with the result. I must say though it is a team effort as far as the school goes. We have an excellent teaching standard but as well we get extremely strong support from parents.

"We focus on using all aspects of the curriculum to develop the child, I think that has a lot to do with our success."

His views were echoed by Tracey Bell, chairman of the Parents, Teachers and Friends Association.

She said: "We are all delighted with the news and think it is very much down to the excellent partnership between the school and the parents.

"As a parent of children at the school I know it is a really inclusive atmosphere where parents are a real part of their children's education."

The school that already has beacon status has registered well above the national average in the core subjects over the past four years and received a glowing Ofsted report last year that rated teaching as 'very good' across the board.

The school, that is oversubscribed, has also just opened a dedicated computer suite with parental fundraising contributing £10,000 towards the state-of-the-art facility.
