Intech is playing host to a tourism summit next week.

The science park at Morn Hill is the venue for the event, being organised by the tourism unit of Winchester City Council.

Aim of the summit, on Tuesday - follow-up to a successful pilot event in April last year - is to promote new initiatives and to influence the tourism strategy for the Winchester district.

Eloise Appleby, head of tourism at the city council, said: "While the pilot was designed to take stock of things and tackle some of the immediate challenges facing the industry, such as Foot and Mouth, this one is about looking to the future, hence the very appropriate and futuristic setting."

On the agenda are presentations about the new Intech Science and Technology Centre, and the Adjutant General's Corps Museum currently under construction at Peninsula Barracks. There's also a display about Winchester's Golden Jubilee project, Hyde Abbey Gardens, and the various funding and free training opportunities available through the Southern and South East England Tourist Board.

Therese Evans, chairman of the summit, said: "We will be discussing an industry which generates £135m to the local economy and supports 4,000 jobs, which is very important to our district."

The tourism summit is free and open to all those with an interest in tourism, from students and residents to tourist guides, and from retailers and restaurateurs to B&B owners.
