Solent Stars cadets emerged 122-64 winners at London United last week - but they very nearly had a wasted journey.

The game was close to being called off when the match officials failed to show at the appointed time, but one did eventually turn up and worked with a qualified member of the crowd.

After a tentative start, Solent ran away with the game to keep up their unbeaten league and cup run. The Londoners were no match for the speedy, table-topping Solent squad, headed by Ransford Laryea with 24 points and Carl Josey with 23.

Solent scorers: Laryea 24, Josey 23, Guymon 19, Young 19, Bawden 10, Titcombe 10, Openshaw 8, Holmar 6, Glasspool 3.

Solent's junior men also produced a convincing scoreline, 93-49 at Waltham Forest.

But coach Steve Chant was dismayed to see his side take their foot off the gas after steaming through the first quarter 30-7, having at one stage opened an impressive 20-0 lead.

Losing defensive determination, they nearly lost the second quarter and only tied the fourth as substitutions seemingly disrupted the flow of the team.

Captain Mark Blackwood shrugged off an ankle injury to lead the scoring, but the team will have to stay focused as they now face three tough games in a row against London sides.

Solent scorers: Mark Blackwood 19, Paul Loosemore 17, Dave Ewen 12, Mat Guymon 9, Ollie Rutter 9, Lawrence Brown 8, Richard Smithson 8, Mark Green 4, Craig Dawson 3, Dave Riley 2.

Solent's junior and cadet women had mixed fortunes against the Haringey Angels - the cadets losing 59-34 to the unbeaten Londoners and the older girls edging a low-scoring affair 38-33.

The cadets knew they were in for a tough afternoon against the league leaders but, having won the week before, the coaching staffed hoped they'd go into the game with renewed confidence.

They started well enough, racing into an early 5-2 lead with two baskets from Chloe McEwen, but the quarter ended 23-7 in Haringey's favour.

To their credit, the Stars girls matched the speed and aggression of the Londoners during the remainder of the game and were outscored by only nine points in the remaining three periods.

Holly Over again led the scoring, while guard Emily Brookfield improves with every game.

Solent scorers : Holly Over 10, Emily Brookfield 8, Chloe McEwen 8, Rachel Almond 6, Bianca Dilworth 2, Charlene Blackman, Becky Carr, Rosamond Day, Kaylee Long.

The junior women were prepared for a tough, physical encounter against Haringey and slightly overdid it with Charlotte Heron picking up three fouls in as many minutes.

With the England player consigned to the bench for the rest of the half, her replacement, Stevie Ellis, took full advantage to play her best game of the season so far.

Solent's 11-point half-time advantage was whittled away by some big three-pointers from Davids of Haringey, but they held their nerve to run down the final few minutes with some good possession basketball.

Solent scorers : Jodi Jerram 8, Rachel Almond 7, Charlotte Heron 7, Stevie Ellis 4, Holly Over 4, Nicola Scrivener 4, Natalie Broom 2, Rosie Chase 2.
