Winchester City sounded a warning to the Jewson Wessex League last night by knocking Lymington & New Milton out of the Russell Cotes Cup 1-0 at Fawcett's Field.

A 21st-minute Kevin Brewster goal put paid to the Linnets - and next on the all-conquering Hampshire League club's hit-list are Gosport Borough in the Hampshire Senior Cup next Tuesday and Brockenhurst in the FA Vase on Saturday week.

With Dave Goss, Steve Beeks and Stuart Lang sidelined, City were without their entire first-choice back three.

And they now have more injury problems after nippy right-winger John Mulhern was stretchered off to hospital after being caught late by Paul Gazzard as he crossed for the goal.

Mulhern's delivery was controlled by Michael Jackson, who laid the ball back for ex-Eastleigh and Bashley man Brewster to slot home.

Lymington had their chances to equalise - Taffy Richardson going closest with a header that was cleared off the line.

Stressing the need for City to keep their feet on the ground, secretary Ray Murphy said: "The players have beaten Lymington which was fully deserved. I hope now that they don't get too cocky and think the Gosport and Brockenhurst games are going to be easy."

Gosport super sub Graham Lindsey scored twice in three minutes - both headers from corners - to secure a 3-1 victory at Hamble ASSC.

He replaced Neil Scammell, who dislocated his finger after a free kick by Hamble's Steve Whitcher had instantly cancelled John Cripps' eighth-minute opener.

Nineteen-year-old former Exeter City pro Jamie Bull provided Fleet Town's touch of class in their 1-0 win at Bournemouth Poppies. He settled matters with what co-manager Adie Aymes described as "a fantastic free kick from the edge of the box which topped off a terrific performance."

With a DML Cup game in prospect at Chippenham Town tonight, Bashley sent their reserves to Andover. They created plenty of chances but lost 2-0 on an evening when centre-half Chris Slade played in goal in place of injured keeper Mike Hookway.

The night's two other ties both spilled into extra-time with BAT finally outgunning East Cowes Vics

4-2 on the Island and Christchurch losing 5-4 at home to Moneyfields.

Dave Puckett and Dave Roberts put BAT 2-1 up at half-time but East Cowes hit back with 11 minutes remaining - Adam Holbrook and Jamie Dyer on target for the Hampshire League underdogs.

The Puckett-Roberts partnership cashed in again in extra-time before Cowes had a man sent off for kicking BAT's boss and former Newport IoW player Andy Leader.

Leader said afterwards: "I've got to be honest, East Cowes are not a bad side. They gave us a good game."

Not for the first time this season, Christchurch co-boss Nigel Cripps was deeply unhappy with the referee after Priory ended the game with nine men against Moneyfields.

Two-goal striker Dominic Taylor was taken to hospital with an ankle injury while John Grace was sent off for handball.

Cripps, who was himself sent from the dugout for ranting and raving, raged: "Our centre forward Rhys Dear was taken out by their keeper and we got a penalty, but the keeper didn't even get booked. The next thing you know, their blokes's driven a point-blank shot straight at John Grace from two or three yards and the referee's sent our lad off for handball."

Priory, who also had Duncan Wells and Ben Griffiths on target, missed a golden chance to settle it late in normal time when Paul Rideout broke clear but got the ball stuck between his feet and shot wide.
