Celebrated Hampshire Under-20 championship winning captain Tom Allen, Fareham-based Bristol Shoguns flanker Richard Martin-Redman and former county Under-16 winger Ugo Monye have been included in the England Under-21 'South' squad that travels to France this month.

The trio have been called up to play a trial match against a France West Under-21s at the French Rugby Centre of Excellence at Marcoussis, near Paris on November 13, while a North side tackle France East on the same day.

Allen, currently studying at Brunel University, was outstanding during the county's Twickenham success that culminated in the raising of the Under-20s championship trophy back in June.

Tom's father, Tim, is also part of the coaching set-up under manager Peter Allen, who is no relation.

However, he will miss out on this game having damaged knee ligaments playing for the Quins' second team at Oxford University on Monday night, but will still travel.

Tim, having played for England Under-18 in his youth, was ecstatic over his son's selection, despite it being marred by the injury.

"Tom is delighted to have been picked, especially having missed out at Under-19 level. But this injury has come at a bad time, but the selectors know the situation and have still named him, so they will give him another game later on."

He is joined by Martin-Redman, who played for Havant before accepting professional terms with Bristol, where he is on the verge of a first XV call-up having impressed in the Under-21 and 'United' sides.

The 20-year-old flanker, who tried his hand with Wales at Under-19 level having been overlooked by the England selectors at that level also, gets his chance this time around.

He played for Hampshire at junior level and came through 'The Hampshire Way' system.

Harlequins winger Monye played alongside Allen in the county Under-16s side before moving away from the game and taking up athletics. He is now at Quins.

It is hoped that these three will follow in the footsteps of Jonny Wilkinson, the former Hampshire Schools fly-half, in gaining full honours.

Allen senior believes they certainly have the chance. "We are developing players now who are good enough to step up into the England team for the future," he said.

"It has been a very long time since players from the south have been considered, but these three are just the start, I believe."
