TWO showbiz legends are to be remembered in a new chapter of the town's life.

Two streets are to be named after comic Benny Hill and musician Heinz Burt in a huge housing development on the former Pirelli site in Leigh Road.

Benny delivered milk to Eastleigh doorsteps before he became a household name and Sixties pop icon Heinz Burt who grew up in the town and died about two years ago, rocketed to fame with band The Tornados. They topped the music charts on both sides of the Atlantic with Telestar.

Now there will be a permanent reminder of the late Benny Hill and Heinz who brought international fame to the railway town.

They are among the first names to be agreed for streets at the former Pirelli site where more than 600 homes are being built in one of the biggest brownfield developments in the south.

It follows a move by Councillor Bill Luffman who had put forward a list of names aimed at honouring Eastleigh's famous sons and daughters from the world of entertainment, arts and sports plus civic figures who have loomed large in the town's history.

Heinz Burt Close and Benny Hill Close will be among the first star-studded streets in Eastleigh's biggest town centre housing development for decades.

There will also be a chance to stroll along Tommy Green Walk, named after the town's famous sporting hero who walked his way to a gold medal in the 1932 Olympics.

The two former showbiz stars and the Olympic ace are among the first ten street names which have been rubber stamped by council chiefs.

Charlie Soar Court and William Panter Court are in memory of two former prominent civic leaders who played a leading role in developing the town.

Sopwith Road commemorates the borough's links with the famous aviation company and Pluto Road is named after the Pirelli's involvement with the manufacture of the D-Day oil pipeline.

Other names that will be taking to the new streets of Eastleigh will be Pirelli Way, Stranding Street and Great Farm Road. The second wave of street names will also have distinguished connections with the town, including Hampshire's former chief constable and ex-Eastleigh schoolboy the late Sir John Hoddinott.

In search for other street tributes Eastleigh has also plucked another home- grown name from the showbiz world - Christabel Drewery who was the model for the Daily Mirror's famous Jane cartoons.

Others to be included will be former Eastleigh MP Sir David Price.

Councillor Luffman said he was delighted that the names he had suggested would be going forward.

"These are people who done so much for our town over the years," he added. Each street plate will carry a brief biography, giving the history behind the name.
