City of Southampton were delighted with the response they received from local clubs when staging their first B grade meet at The Quays.

Named in memory of the late James Moreno, around 300 swimmers aged from 10 to 17 competed from clubs such as Hamble Aquatics, Locksheath, Eastleigh and Havant and Waterlooville.

Club chairperson Julie Quinn said: "This meet is a very important event, encouraging young local swimmers to gain competition experience, and give them the enthusiasm to become more successful."

Louise Colmer, 13, was City's top performer, winning the Top Girl award for her age-group.

In the girls final, Havant & Waterlooville swimmer Katherine West edged out City's Joelie Haysom, whilst Eastleigh's Robert Gilbert beat City's Simon Witt.

Meeting organiser Chris Marshall said the event will become an annual addition to the swimming calendar, to compliment the Sprint Meet scheduled next year for February 9, 2003. Further details from Marshall on 07789 881199.
