THE RSPCA has been inundated with promises of help following news that its Stubbington animal shelter could close.

The Stubbington Ark is one of the largest animal shelters in the country.

Over the past five years it has looked after 7,826 cats, 4,472 dogs and countless unwanted rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets and hamsters.

Volunteers at the Ranvilles Lane centre have also looked after some more unusual critters.

But, as the Daily Echo reported earlier last week, it is facing closure unless kind-hearted Hampshire residents can help keep its doors open.

After an initial appeal earlier this week, it looks well on its way to meeting its target.

Lucy Clarke from the RSPCA said: "We have had an absolutely brilliant response. We have been inundated with offers of help.

"We are really, really pleased with the public's generosity. But we are not quite there yet."

Shelter manager Mike Ward said: "The reality is that we cannot continue to do everything for every animal.

"We are implementing a number of cost-cutting measures but the help of the public is urgently needed if we are to secure the long-term future of this centre."

He added: "The threat of closure is a real possibility."

Anyone who can help is urged to call Kate Browne on 01489 575455.
