IMPROVEMENTS are being made to a section of road near RAF Odiham following a fatal road accident.

Motorist Susan Smith, 31, of Winchester, died on July 31 on the B3349, after it is thought she lost control of her car.

An inquest into her death heard last week that the car veered into the wrong lane and collided with another vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.

Following an investigation by Hampshire County Council into the incident, which occurred by a bend two miles from South Warnborough in the 40mph zone near RAF Odiham, recommendations are being made to erect "slippery road" signs and for resurfacing treatment to be carried out.

The improvements are expected to be made by early next year.

The inquest heard that on the morning of the accident, Susan had sent a mobile phone text message to her friend which read: "Feel like calling in sick. Can't cope. Just feel like driving my car off the road." Her friend later replied: "Are you okay?"

A crash investigator concluded that oversteering on a bend just before the accident was the most likely explanation for the loss of control, and the oncoming driver would have been unable to avoid the collision.

Recording a verdict of accidental death, Coroner Andrew Bradley said: "It was the first rainy day for some time. The road surface would have been greasy.

"What we don't know is what speed Susan was travelling. The other significant factor here is the text message, which she may have received and looked at."

He concluded: "She loses control of the vehicle. It sends her car into a spin and a collision kills her instantly."
