A SOUTHAMPTON man has given himself up after police e-mailed him in connection with football-related violence.

The arrest brings the total number to 22 of those detained in connection with a huge fight between Saints and Charlton supporters in April.

More than 150 police officers made a series of dawn raids on Thursday across Southampton and in London, arresting eight people in the city in connection with the fight.

Officers seized computer equipment and paperwork in the operation, known as Operation Fabric, which enabled them to e-mail the 22nd suspect.

In what police believe to have been a planned confrontation, fighting broke out at Maze Hill train station, south London, soon after 2pm on the Saturday of the Charlton v Southampton 1-1 draw in the Premiership.

About 15 Saints fans clashed with a group of about 20 Charlton supporters.

Assistant chief constable Paul Nicholas of the British Transport Police said: "Events such as those at Maze Hill, deliberately organised to avoid police detection, do occur and are of growing concern to rail users and train companies."

"When police arrived at Maze Hill the fans had dispersed, but witness questioning and CCTV evidence led to the identification of the men.
