A Winchester mother and her daughter have taken up a fund-raising challenge to ride 275 miles in four days from London to Paris.
Shirley Dyson-Laurie, and her 25-year-old daughter, Penny, were scheduled to begin the challenge yesterday (Thursday), raising money for the Royal British Legion.
Shirley said: "I am not a cyclist at all! However, I bought a bike from a friend at Easter and now go training in the quiet lanes north of Winchester."
Shirley is a member of Winchester and District Athletics Club, and has received cycling tips from triathletes at the organisation.
Over 170 cyclists are taking part in "Pedal to Paris", which concludes in the French capital this Sunday with a police motorcade escorting the riders to the Arc de Triomphe.
Shirley hopes to raise £1,250 for the Legion, which has raised £1.3m in total from the cycling event since the first run in 1996.
The Legion says it spends around £48m per year, helping over five million Ex-Service people, and their dependants.
