King of Shaves won this year's Honda Formula 4-Stroke 130hp offshore powerboat Championship title in spectacular style on Saturday.

The race was the penultimate one in the 2002 season, raced at the prestigious Honda Cowes Classic Powerboat Festival - but it was Hampshire teams that ruled the waves as H-2 Hoodlum, raced by Shaun Lapworth and Elly Haines, from Oakley, won this crucial round in remarkable style, crossing the finish line ten boat lengths in front of impressive rookie team H-14 Warmup Undertile Heaters.

"We're thrilled with the victory," said Lapworth from the podium.

"We enjoy racing at Cowes because the Solent is normally rough and we seem to excel in rough water.

"This also completes a hat-trick for us - we won in Cowes both last year and the year before, so I'm glad we haven't lost our form!"

H-4 Rocela, driven by Poole's Peter Moore alongside Scotsman Iain McLean, finished fifth in the race and remains in second place in the championship (100 points) and Hoodlum in third (87 points).

"We're not displeased with the result but we could have done better," said Moore. "We're still second overall."

Championship leaders H-1 King of Shaves cruised across the finish line in fourth but gained enough points to clinch the 2002 Honda Formula 4-Stroke 130hp championship.

Driver James Sheppard from Surrey was thrilled.

"It's a great day," he said. "We're absolutely thrilled to retain the title."

In the 225hp class, Steve and Tanya Baird from Haslemere took the chequered flag ahead of Southampton team R2 Composites in second.

"That's only our second victory of the season so we're really pleased," said Tanya.

"We had some great battles with Don and Kev in R2 Composites but, by the last lap, we'd developed an advantage of a few seconds and then we just had to retain that."
