TWO motorists were recovering last night after escaping serious injury when their cars ploughed into a foot-wide rock left in the middle of one of Southampton's busiest roads.

The 40cm rock was dumped in the middle of Bursledon Road shortly after midnight last night outside the city's Hightown Fire Station.

Minutes later a car being driven by a six-month pregnant 26-year-old woman smashed into the rock, ripping part of the engine from the car and causing her to slam on her brakes.

Seconds after that another car hit the rock also causing huge damage, although again luckily the driver escaped injury.

The vandalism comes only a day after Hightown Station came under attack from stone-wielding teenage thugs on Sunday night, and is the latest in a series of attacks linked to the station.

Bitterne Police, who are carrying out an investigation into the rock's dumping, refused to rule out a connection between these two latest incidents.
