Romsey'S new mayor Mike Richardson performed one of his first jobs when he congratulated volunteers who regularly give up their time to help others in the town.

Cllr Richardson presented 48 people with Test Valley Community Services (TVCS) volunteer awards at the start of National Volunteers Week.

Voluntary organisation TVCS presents the awards annually to people in the Romsey area, with bronze awards for 100 hours' community service a year, silver for 300 hours a year, and gold for 500 hours a year.

This year's award-winning volunteers were from Jane Scarth House cancer drop-in centre, Romsey Police, Romsey Scouts, The Rest A While drop-in centre for the elderly, Macmillan Cancer Relief, Romsey Talking Newspaper, TVCS, and the Countess Brecnock Hospice in Andover. TVCS senior administrator Greg Alexander said: "This is an annual event when volunteers get the recognition they deserve for their support of small groups and voluntary organisations.

"The award winners were nominated by the organisations they work for."
