THE country's favourite wannabe, Darius Danesh, will be entertaining the crowds at Power in the Park next week.

Danesh - better known simply as Darius after leaping to fame in the TV talent shows Popstars and Pop Idol - is just one of a host of big names scheduled to take part in the eighth free pop concert on Southampton Common, which this year takes place on Sunday June 9. The Glaswegian-born singer-songwriter, who impressed judges on the phenomenally-popular TV shows with his persistence and cheeky charm as well as his singing abilities, is due to release his debut single this summer, having recently signed a deal with Mercury Records.

This week's other new Power in the Park announcement is soul singer Beverley Knight, who has had hit singles with Shoulda Woulda Coulda and Get Up! Knight was the star turn at the recent World Cup charity party thrown by David and Victoria Beckham.

So far, 16 acts have been confirmed for the concert, which takes place from midday to 4pm.

As well as Darius and Beverley Knight, fans will be entertained by the likes of Blue, Mis-teeq, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Liberty X, Daniel Beddingfield, Sugababes, Hear'Say and ex-Steps stars H and Clare.

A handful of acts left to complete the line-up was expected to be announced today or tomorrow by event organisers local radio station Power FM.

Last year's Power in the Park attracted 80,000 to Southampton Common, with more expected this time.
