The Bootleg Beatles, Portsmouth Guildhall, 7 May

THEIR mop-tops are just as floppy, they play the original music note for note, and their impersonations even include physical and verbal tics.

Where Beatles tribute band the Bootleg Beatles are concerned, the gap between fantasy and reality is closing fast - which is why they've become one of the most sought-after acts in the country.

The Bootlegs got together in 1979, when they met in the cast of the West End musical Beatlemania. Proving themselves much longer-lasting than the quartet, they've entertained audiences from Wembley Stadium to Tokyo's Budokan Stadium (where the real Fab Four performed in 1966) with their seamless combination of musical excellence and lavish production values.

A typical Bootlegs show is a spectacular experience, with multiple costume changes adding to the impression of a magical mystery tour through every era of Beatledom - from the sharply-suited early days to the spaced-out guru look of the hippie era.

Performance: 7.30pm. Box office: 023 9282 4355.
