POLICE hunting a man who tried to pull a 42-year-old woman into his car at Bursledon have appealed for witnesses.

The incident happened at 11pm on Monday when the victim was walking to work at the Tesco superstore in Hamble Lane.

A car drew up close to her when she got to the junction of Bursledon Road and Botley Road and the woman - police are not naming her - mistakenly thought that the vehicle belonged to a

colleague who often gives her a lift to work.

She approached the car and opened the door - but realised her mistake as soon as she saw the driver.

The man beckoned to her and said: "Get in." As she moved away from the vehicle he grabbed her arm, but she managed to break free and the dark coloured estate car - possibly fitted with roof bars - drove off.

The woman was not injured and continued to walk to Tesco where she raised the alarm.

Today police appealed for help from the public.

PC Dave Jackson said: "We would like to speak to anyone who witnessed this incident and can help us identify this man."

The driver is described as white, aged between 60 and 70, balding with grey hair worn in a "comb-over" style. He was clean shaven and of average build.

Anyone who can help is asked to contact PC Jackson at Bitterne police station on 0845 045 4545.
