VENTNOR'S Marcus Militello was in winning form at the Ryde Tennis Club's recent tournament.

The 12-year-old defeated Connor Grant, 9, from Ryde in the under-12s final, winning 6-1, 6-3.

Militello took the first four games until Grant held serve in the fifth game. The older boy decisively served out the sixth game with two aces, and broke serve to 15 in the seventh to take the first set.

A flurry of double faults in the opening games of the second set saw breaks exchanged, until decisive play from Militello saw him win the title.

Sean Furmidge defeated Carlo Nieddu 6-1, 6-4 to win the plate competiton.

Brothers Connor and Kyle Grant teamed up and were unbeaten in the doubles round robin, with Ryan Munns and William Newnham (Ryde) the runners-up.

In the girl's event, Hannah Price (Gurnard Pines) defeated Philippa Harrison (Brighstone) 6-3, 7-5 in the final.

In the under-15 event, Ryde Lawn's Nathan Steel justified his top seeding by playing through three rounds with wins in straight sets, finally overcoming third seed, Michael Norman with a score of 6-3, 6-4. Henry Rivers (Ryde) won the plate final against Adam Gibson (Ryde High School) in three sets, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3.

Steel and Norman proved unbeatable in the doubles round robin, with Tom Rodley (Ventnor) and Stuart Peak (Ryde) second.

The top seed in the under-18 event was Jamie Wright, 16, from the Beaconsfield School of Tennis.

The next tournament at the Ryde Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club will be an Open Mixed Doubles using the Lansdown system for 16 pairs and will be held on Sunday, May 19.

The Isle of Wight Count Press Junior Tournament will be held between July 29th to August 3.
