POPULAR events for cyclists of every ability start in a week's time in the south of Test Valley borough.

Test Valley Tour 2002 cycling begins with a 100km route starting from Broadlands in Romsey on Sunday 21 April.

Riders have the choice of three routes - 100km, 50km or 20km - using mainly quiet roads and country lanes. Clear waymarking should mean there will be little need to use the route map provided.

Teresa Bradley, borough marketing and events officer, said: "Last year's road route was a great success with almost 250 riders taking part. We expect this number to increase as more people are enjoying cycling, either just for fun or to improve health and fitness levels.

"It's definitely not a race, just an opportunity to enjoy the best bits of the Test Valley."

Riders can pre-register or sign up on the day between 9am and 10am at Broadlands. It is hoped that all riders will have begun their chosen ride by 10am at the latest in order to be back to claim a free cream tea, available until 5pm.

Other events include the popular mountain bike challenge route and for this first time, a winter mountain bike challenge planned for November.

The borough council also produces 25 packs of walking and cycling leisure routes to follow at any time of the year. They can be picked up at tourist information centres.
