Hampshire driver Phil Jeffery aims to show them young-uns the way home as he moves up a class in the Volkswagen Racing Cup at Donington on Sunday.

Jeffery, 43 and from St Mary Bourne, near Andover, will be at the wheel of his self-prepared Golf GTI.

He enjoyed an impressive season in the Volkswagen Racing Cup last year, winning his class eight times to secure the Class C championship title and take runner-up position in the overall championship.

This year farmer Phil has uprated the specification of his Golf's engine to enable him to compete in the B class.

The Volkswagen Racing Cup - which is open to nearly all forms of track-going Volkswagen - is the fastest growing saloon car championship in the UK with more than 30 cars taking part this year.

Among them are 2.8-litre V6-engined New Beetles, Boras and Golfs, as well several turbo-charged cars.

Donington's opening races - there are two at each of the championship's six meetings - will also see the first ever appearance in the UK of a diesel-engined racing car.

The Golf TDI will be driven by the reigning champion, Northamptonshire's Michael Neuhoff.
