Shirley Junior School were the surprise package of the 34th Southampton Schools' Trampoline Championships.

The competition attracted 390 competitors, representing 50 different schools, to Taunton's College and Shirley caused the upset of the day by narrowly beating national finalists Regents Park to the under-12 team title, adding to their under-9 success.

Mountbatten went one better with a hat-trick of team wins in the under-16 girls', under-16 boys' and under-13 girls'categories, while hosts Taunton's took both the open A and B titles.

Individually there were some excellent performances, particularly by the National Grade 1 competitors from Southampton Trampoline Club.

One of the hottest battles was between Taunton's pair Claire Madigan and Becki Stanley for the ladies' title. It produced an exciting, high standard contest with Madigan's style marks just edging out Stanley's difficulty mark to claim the trophy for a third year running.

Thornden's Barnaby Daniel once again did the double, claiming both the under-16 boys' and men's open crowns.

l Southampton Trampoline Club had another successful day in the Grade 1 National competition at Stourbridge.

Becki Stanley reached the finals in second place and her preliminary score was high enough to qualify her for the National finals at over-18 level and entry into the prestigious Grade 1 ladies' qualifying competition in Cardiff on April 20.

Katie Woodgate even surprised herself by gaining high enough marks for ninth place in the under-18 girls' event. It gave her a qualifying score for the National finals, where she will be joined by 12th-placed Claire Madigan.

Southampton's under-18 girls' team gained a career best second place, narrowly beaten by National champions Edgbarrow.

The team is still young. Claire Madigan is 16, Steph Stanley 15, while both Woodgate and Kirsty Madigan are mere 14-year-olds.

Coach Howard Tear said: "This was a great day for the club. The girls showed they can perform at the highest level of trampolining and, also, our one male competitor, Barnaby Daniel, performed his 10.0 tariff routine for the first time in competition, which is a major milestone."

There was more honour for the Southampton club when Tear was chosen to chair the judging panel for the Grade 1 men's competition.
