TV SOAP EastEnders has left campaigners bidding to raise funds to convert a loo at Hamble Primary School into a computer suite feeling flushed with success.
An Albert Square road sign was top of the pops at £155 when it came to a celebrity auction of more than 70 star-studded lots donated to The Friends of Hamble Primary School.
The event raised £2,600 and has now put the computer suite within touching distance for the Friends, who have been working at the project for nearly a year.
The Albert Square road sign was sold for £155 while a signed photograph of Elizabeth Taylor fetched £100.
The auction was made possible thanks to the determination of Hayley Hamlett, 32, who sent out more than 500 letters to celebrities. But she said it had been a team effort and paid tribute to school caretaker Frank Smith.
At first, the Friends believed they would have to raise £20,000 to turn their computer dream into reality but work put in by parents and local people have reduced the cost to £13,500.
After the auction, the Friends are now about £1,000 short of their goal.
Hayley said: "I went to both schools in Hamble and even though I live in Bursledon I send my daughter Sherri there and in September my daughter Jessie will be going."
