TRAINER Martin Pipe became the first jumps trainer to earn more than £2m in prize money in a single season when his five-year-old Ravenswood scored by one-and-a-quarter lengths at Newbury.

The 5-2 favourite won under young jockey Tom Scudamore in Saturday's UK Hygiene Handicap Hurdle, beating off the challenge of Lussino, ridden by Robert Thornton.

Celebrations were, however, muted after the death of the Pipe-trained Valiramix at the Cheltenham Festival and Pipe's father David earlier in the week.

By coincidence, Thornton was the winning jockey the day before at Newbury in a race named in honour of a former Pipe star, Sabin du Loir, who found much success under Scudamore's father, former champion jockey Peter Scudamore.

Thornton piloted Alan King's 7-1 chance Shosen to a nine-lengths win in the Sabin du Loir Maiden Hurdle.

The richest-ever race for mares over jumps, the Crandon Park Mares Handicap Hurdle, was won by 25-1 outsider Monger Lane on Saturday, Newbury's second day. The race was the final of a an 11-round series.

Lambourn trainer Nicky Henderson was banking on victory for his Deep Sunset but the 5-2 favourite could finish no higher than fourth under Mick Fitzgerald.

Two races later, the pair did find success when Isio was a three-lengths winner in the Mark Longland 30th Birthday Novice Hurdle.
