DISASTER was narrowly avoided last May, when American blues musician Kelly Joe Phelps failed to turn up at The Brook in South-ampton for a gig due to a misunderstanding.

Fortunately, local musician Mo Thomas was in the audience, dashed back home to get his guitar and saved the day with an impromptu 90-minute set, duly declared a triumph.

Phelps was not at fault for his non-appearance last year and plays a belated gig at the Southampton music venue on Sunday, February 3. Mighty Mo has been rewarded with a support spot for filling the breach last year, so a couple of hours of atmospheric acoustic blues are in prospect.

Phelps released his fourth album, Sky Like A Broken Clock, last year and will be introducing some of the songs from it.

On his last album he put aside his slide for finger-picking, and fleshed out his sound by recording with bassist Larry Taylor and drummer Billy Conway. Doors open at 8pm with an early start to the music. Advance tickets for the gig cost £10. Call the box office on 023 8055 5366.
