A MOTORIST suffered serious hip injuries in a freak accident on the M27 near Southampton this morning.
Motorway police say a man was changing a tyre at about 7.20am when he was struck by a tyre that fell off a passing Leyland DAF lorry carrying a load of tyres and live chickens.
The accident happened on the east-bound section of the motorway near junction two.
An ambulance was called to the scene near Ower and a crash investigation unit attended.
Police say the inside lane of the motorway was closed from Cadnam to the Ower turn off but traffic was moving freely. The lane was expected to fully re-open in the early afternoon.
The motorist, who has not been identified by police but was described as a middle-aged man, was treated for around 40 minutes
at the scene by medics before being taken by ambulance to Southampton General Hospital.
There were no passengers in his car, and no other vehicles were involved in the bizarre incident.Lyndhurst Traffic Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the accident to contact them immediately via 0845 045 45 45.
