THEY said "no-one could have scripted that" 1 . . . and I was there! Of course, I'm talking about when Matt Le Tissier scored the final ever Premiership goal at The Dell to beat Arsenal 3-2 at the end of last season.

They said "no-one could have scripted that" 2 . . . and I was there! That was on Saturday when I was fortunate enough to be at Old Trafford for the England v Greece World Cup qualifier.

Okay, I know we didn't win and it was very close, but for sheer tension and emotion it would be difficult to beat.

What made things worse was that news of Germany drawing with Finland in Gelsenkirchen was going round the ground and we knew that losing 2-1 would have meant the play-offs.

I have to say that I never ever dreamed of the day that I would cheer so loudly for a David Beckham goal at Old Trafford but then I seriously think he is probably the best player of my era (yes, I know I'm still young).

I hope that when his name is announced at Premiership grounds in future he gets the applause he deserves.

The other thought is about bravery. All sorts of words have been used about captain Beckham since the game but brave must be saved for the mascot who led the England team out.

The little six-year-old girl is terminally ill. I'm sure that Saturday will live in the memory of her family for many years.

We should also applaud the Greek goalkeeper for his fine performance but while on the subject of jeering and cheering, when will the England fans (or some of them) lose the habit of booing and whistling during the opposition's national anthem?

I was sitting near the Greek contingent on Saturday, and their behaviour and support for their team throughout was excellent. I'm sure some of them had travelled a long way, and they did not deserve to be insulted in this way.

However, in all the emotion we must not forget that England did not perform at all well and they clearly have some important lessons to learn before the finals next year.

All I can say is that I hope Ashley Cole and Martin Keown are slow learners and that they play just as well (or badly) next Saturday at St Mary's!

I wonder, could our first victory at the new stadium be against Arsenal?

Come on lads, give me "no-one could have scripted that" 3 . . . I'll be there!
