SUMMER racegoers are being treated to a feast of high-class racing at Salisbury next week with the traditional two-day August meeting on August 15 and 16.

The highlight of the first day will be the £25,000-added Listed European Breeders' Fund Upavon Stakes at 3.10pm, Salisbury's most valuable race.

Preceding that, though, comes the European Breeders' Fund Sandown Maiden Stakes at 2.10pm, followed by, at 2.40pm, the Burnett Swayne Claiming Stakes.

The attention will then be focused on the Upavon Stakes, before the Violet Applin Challenge Cup Handicap takes centre stage at 3.40pm.

Next on the agenda is what is likely to be an enthralling juvenile contest, the European Breeders' Fund/Country Gentlemen's Association Novice Stakes, which takes place at 4.10pm. This race has produced some future stars over the years, most noticeably Barathea Guest, who claimed third place at last year's 2000 Guineas.

The first day is rounded off with the Wilson Plumbing Supplies Fillies' Handicap at 4.40pm.

Thursday's main event will be the mile-long £22,000-added Listed Sovereign Stakes, commencing at 3.20pm - one race in a six-race card, starting at 2.15pm and finishing at 5pm.

Jeremy Martin, clerk of the course and general manager at Salisbury, is optimistic that the meeting will draw a big crowd.

He said: "Our last fixture was highly successful with a crowd of just under 6,000 people enjoying the racing. This August meeting features good quality action and we look forward to welcoming another excellent crowd during the holiday season."

Admission prices are £15 for members, £10 in the Tattersalls and £5 for the course. Accompanied children under-16 are free, with car parking also free. Gates open at 12pm each day.
