Dave Beasant has urged his new Portsmouth team-mates to pull together in the wake of Aaron Flahavan's death.

The 42-year-old goalkeeper, who turned down offers from Birmingham and Oxford, was expected to sign for the First Division club today just four days after Aaron Flahavan was killed in a car crash at Bournemouth.

Beasant trained with Pompey yesterday and will sign a short-term contract with no fee involved. He is expected to go straight into the team for Saturday's Nationwide League opener at Wolves.

"Everyone at the club was on a bit of a high before the weekend and then the tragedy hit the club," he said.

"Everyone has got to pull together and raise the spirits of the club as much as they can.

"It's going to be a hard game for the players, the staff and the fans to be involved in.

The veteran keeper, who left Nottingham Forest this summer, had no doubts that he was still up for the challenge of First Division football.

"I spoke to Harry (Redknapp, director of football) and Graham Rix (manager) and they're taking the club in the right direction. They've made some great summer signings and the club is only lacking confidence."

Aaron Flahavan's funeral is to take place on Monday, the club said today.

The 25-year-old's funeral will take place at St James Church, West End, Southampton. The family have yet to decide if the funeral will be open to the public.
