A RADICAL rethink of leisure facilities in Fareham as been ordered - with all options open, including the closure of the borough's famous Ferneham Hall.

Thousands of Fareham households are to be sent a survey asking residents what leisure facilities they want.

The council is considering a giant sports, arts and community centre complex but warns Ferneham Hall, the borough's main arts venue, could close.

The hall has attracted many big names, including Rolling Stones star Bill Wyman and comic poetess Pam Ayres. It is a mainstay of Fareham and Gosport Folk Festival as well as annual pantomimes.

The axe also hangs over Fareham Leisure Centre and Fareham Community Centre.

Chief leisure officer Peter Grimwood said: "Some of the facilities in the borough are coming to the end of their natural lives. We are trying to find whether they are worth investing in.

"It doesn't mean we will get rid of what we have got."

The re-think was triggered after the council received a £2m repair bill for Fareham Leisure Centre, which is more than 20 years old.

Council leader Sean Woodward said: "We want to make sure we are spending money in the right way."

In reaction to fears that Ferneham Hall may close, Mr Woodward said: "Nothing's ruled in and nothing's ruled out. One possibility could be a huge investment in Ferneham Hall.

"Another idea may be to build new theatre facilities next to the leisure centre. All options are open."
